ChatGPT and Learning: Innovative Strategies for Transforming Education

Over the past three years I have been able to explore new ways of teaching and learning. I have found that specific prompts can be very effective tools for fostering critical thinking and creativity in the LEINN Grade. As a parent, I have also tried these approaches with my children, looking for ways to make learning more engaging and meaningful for them.

The following examples are the result of my experience and experimentation in both settings. They are ideas that can be adapted for different learning levels and contexts, from formal education in the classroom to informal learning at home. Each of these prompts is designed to stimulate curiosity, foster understanding, and make learning a rewarding experience.

Solve specific mathematical problems

Mathematics, although it can sometimes seem intimidating, is a universal language that helps us understand and solve real-world problems. For example, if we have the problem, "If John has 3 apples and Anna gives him 2 more, how many apples does John now have?" The prompt would be, "Provide a step-by-step solution to this addition problem: John has 3 apples and Ann gives him 2 more."

Develop debating skills

Debate allows us to explore and articulate different points of view, fostering a deeper understanding of the issues. If we were debating the adoption of renewable energy, the prompt might be, "Write a debate argument supporting the adoption of renewable energy from an environmentalist's perspective."

Understanding basic concepts

Understanding a concept at a basic level allows us to communicate and connect with those who have no prior knowledge of the topic. If we were explaining the water cycle to an elementary school student, the prompt would be, "Explain the concept of the water cycle in simple terms suitable for a third grader."

Compare works of art

Analyzing and comparing works of art allows us to appreciate the evolution of art and its impact on society. An example of a prompt would be, "Draw a comparison between Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in terms of style, technique, and cultural context."

Combining science with creativity

Creativity can help make science more engaging and accessible. A prompt for this activity might be, "Compose a sonnet about the process of photosynthesis."

Simplifying scientific theories

Transforming complex concepts into simple, engaging explanations can help spread scientific knowledge. For example, "Summarize Einstein's theory of relativity in a fun and engaging way for elementary school children."

Recounting historical events

A good historical account allows us to travel back in time and better understand our present. An example prompt would be, "As a historian, describe the key events of the French Revolution."

Understanding financial concepts

Financial education is essential to making informed decisions in our daily lives. An example prompt might be, "With a friendly, approachable tone, it explains the basics of investing in the stock market and how it applies to retirement planning."

Analyze literary works

By analyzing literature, we can explore universal themes and develop a deeper understanding of the human experience. A prompt might be, "Summarize the plot of Moby Dick in a way that highlights its main thematic elements."

Practicing translation

Translation allows us to cross linguistic and cultural barriers. A prompt might be: "Translate the following sentence into {target language}: '{source language sentence}'. It's a fantastic practice that helps us immerse ourselves in new cultures and better understand those around us. As with my youngest son, who embarked on a student exchange to France, where he had to translate every day. I remember how he arrived one day, excited, saying, "Dad, I can finally understand and respond in French without much thought!". And I thought, what a joy to see how language learning opens doors to new worlds. ChatGPT can certainly facilitate this cultural and linguistic immersion, making language learning more accessible to all.
